Mounting Ukip support sends it into the lead for euro elections
NIGEL Farage’s Ukip party has topped a poll for the Sunday Times ahead of the European elections, beating Labour and the Conservatives despite a week of political gaffes.
The YouGov poll recorded 31 per cent support for Ukip, with Labour on 28 per cent and the Conservatives in third place on 19 per cent. It is the first time YouGov has called Farage as the top choice for voters in its polling.
Ukip’s poll success comes as Liberal Democrat Danny Alexander warns today that leaving the EU would spell disaster for the British economy.
Speaking at the launch of CityUK’s research into the impact of leaving the EU, Alexander will say: “Pulling out of the EU is the very last thing our country needs. It will kill our hard earned recovery stone dead.”
He will say that voters should think twice about supporting Ukip, adding that the party appears to enjoy attracting negative publicity: “There is considerable controversy about Ukip. You could say that they appear to almost revel in it,” the chief secretary to the Treasury is set to say.
