Saints preserving home form is key to early season surge
PERHAPS the best story from this exciting season is Southampton’s surge into the top three under Mauricio Pochettino.
Eyebrows were raised when Pochettino replaced Nigel Adkins, who led the Saints into the top flight with successive promotions, but the Argentinian has improved them even further.
The 4-1-4-1 system Southampton favour allows them to press high up the pitch and, coupled with their formidable work rate, has brought them great success.
They have made sure that they are hard to beat at home, and that can prove the difference between a comfortable Premier League existence and scrapping for your life at the wrong end of the table.
Half of the Premier League’s bottom 10 teams haven’t won more than one game at home this season. Southampton already have four victories from six, and that has given them the confidence to pick up a couple of wins on the road too.
