Szczesny wants Arsenal to stretch their lead
ARSENAL goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has called on his team-mates to reassert their authority at the top of the Premier League table, following Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to title rivals Manchester United.
Striker Robin van Persie’s first-half header was enough to inflict a first league defeat on the Gunners since the opening day of the season and cut their lead at the summit to two points.
But with three of their next four league fixtures at home, Szczesny believes Arsenal can build a healthy lead at the top of the table ahead of the traditionally hectic festive period.
“It’s important for us to get back to winning ways as quickly as we can and make the difference at the top of the table bigger,” said the 23-year-old.
“Of course we’re still in a good position. Other teams dropped points this week as well.”
Meanwhile, England’s all-time leading goalscorer Sir Bobby Charlton believes United have played their way back into the title race, following an indifferent start to the season. David Moyes’ side lie fifth in the table, five points behind Arsenal, and Charlton is content with the champions’ position after 11 games.
“Here we are creeping up the table again and that is what we want,” said the United director, who scored 49 times for England.
“I think we are still very much in the race to win the title.”
