Day to play on after tragedy
THREE-TIME Major runner-up Jason Day intends to represent hosts Australia in this week’s World Cup of Golf, despite losing eight members of his family in Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
Day’s grandmother, uncle and six cousins died in the tropical cyclone that has claimed almost 4,000 lives.
Yet the world No18 will partner Masters champion Adam Scott in the 28-team event, which begins on Thursday, as planned.
Day said: “It’s been toughest on my mother, there’s been no communication. Everything got wiped out in the area where my grandma and relatives lived.”
China’s Liang Wen-chong has promised to donate half of his $135,000 (£84,000) winners’ cheque from last week’s Resorts World Manila Masters to the relief effort.
