UK car output climbs again in strong October
THE REMARKABLE upswing of the UK’s car manufacturers continued during October, registering the largest monthly increase in 2013.
Output rose 17.4 per cent in comparison to the same month last year, with an astonishing 52.4 per cent improvement in domestic demand. Through the year to date, the home market for UK-produced cars has grown 26.6 per cent in comparison to the first ten months of 2012.
According to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) the export market also expanded considerably in the sector last month, with an 11.4 per cent increase recorded year-on-year.
SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: “With European demand showing early signs of recovery, we expect production to continue positively in the coming months.”
With production for the domestic market particularly strong, the proportion of cars created for export has fallen from 85.3 per cent in October last year to 80.9 per cent.
Despite the swell in business, the decline of the commercial vehicle market continued, with the number manufactured down 33.8 per cent from October 2012, falling from 11,899 to 7,875 units.
