Bermondsey has City professionals lined up for homes
“Spa” development hopes to revive former industrial heartland
LONDON Bridge and Borough have secured their place in the capital as desirable residential locations. But the fate of its neighbour, Bermondsey, is yet to be secured. As a former industrial heartland in London, a sizeable portion of its housing stock is made up of warehouse conversions – such as Hartley’s Jam Factory and former tanneries nearby – and former council housing. But all that is about to change as regeneration spreads into the borough. Southwark Council’s Bermondsey Spa project is expected to bring around 2,000 modern homes to the area, scattering contemporary apartments from Spa Road to Jamaica Road.
The latest chapter in its transformation – and one of the few chances left to take advantage of the emerging housing market in the area – is the release this week of the final 27 homes in The Porter Building. Developed by Hyde New Homes, The Porter Building in Spa Road is less than a ten minute walk away from trendy Bermondsey Street, where a crop of eclectic restaurants, gastropubs and independent shops have cropped up in recent years. Stroll along for another five minutes, and you’ll find yourself on the doorstep of Shad Thames at the foot of Tower Bridge, fast becoming one of the most desirable places to live in London, with its picturesque bistros lined alongside the the river.
Unusually, residents also have the option to furnish the one, two and three bedroom apartments using an on-site Style Studio offering ready-made furniture and kitchen packs. Due to the recent interest from new build developers, Bermondsey has seen an influx in professionals who work nearby in the City or at London Bridge. Debbie Small, from Hyde New Homes, says the developer’s vision for The Porter Building and its neighbouring developments was an attempt to “create an attractive offering for those seeking a new home in a vibrant location, within walking distance of some of the capital’s hotspots and key working hubs.”
Prices start at £410,000 for a one-bedroom apartment. To register your interest, call 020 7231 1200 or visit theporterbuilding.co.uk
