Wozniacki shocks Russian foe in opening WTA clash
DENMARK’S Caroline Wozniacki summoned reserves of energy to stun five-time grand slam champion Maria Sharapova in an exhausting opening match in the WTA Finals in Singapore.
Eighth-seed Wozniacki claimed a 7-6 [7-4], 6-7 [5-7]. 6-2 victory in three hours and 14 minutes during a match which featured 12 breaks of serve and 111 unforced errors.
“I was feeling tired but in the third set I felt I stepped it up a little bit, went a bit more for my shots and I am happy to have won,” said Wozniacki.
Sharapova needs to reach at least the final and bank on Serena Williams losing her two remaining group matches in the round-robin tournament if the 27-year-old is to secure her first season-ending No1 ranking.
