Moyes’ headache as Van Persie heads United list of absentees
MANCHESTER United boss David Moyes is without a quartet of stars as he looks to lead them into the Champions League last 16 for the first time tonight.
Last season’s top scorer Robin van Persie remains sidelined with a groin injury for the trip to Bayer Leverkusen – managed by former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia – while centre-back Nemanja Vidic is still recovering from concussion having missed Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Cardiff.
Moyes was already without key midfield duo Marouane Fellaini, who is suspended following his red card against Real Sociedad, and Michael Carrick, who has a heel problem.
Victory in Germany would confirm United’s progress from Group A, and Moyes played down fears Van Persie’s previous injury woes could be recurring.
“We don’t think he’s quite ready yet,” said Moyes. “We’re going to keep monitoring him. Neither [him nor Vidic] are long term.”
