City’s old guard gets together over gulls’ eggs
“PINSTRIPE is dead, long live pinstripe,” Matthew Wright, partner at NewSmith told The Capitalist, as we surveyed the crowd at Macmillan’s annual Gulls’ Egg Luncheon yesterday. “Seventy five per cent used to be pin stripe, now it’s deemed too brash,” he lamented.
Taking place at Merchant Taylor’s Hall on Threadneedle Street, the luncheon sees the City’s longest serving names (and a good gaggle of new faces) get together to raise some cash for Macmillan and gobble up some rare gulls’ eggs.
Wright’s boss at NewSmith, chief executive Ronald Carlson, was enjoying the eggs. “Matthew told me to come along, I asked him what it was like and he said I’d have to see it to understand.”
Meanwhile Brian Winterflood and his wife Doreen were reminiscing about his infamous Christmas party. It turns out the party (held in April) didn’t end so well for the pair. “We were walking along and Brian just disappeared – he fell flat on his face and we had to go straight to St Thomas’,” Doreen told The Capitalist. A flash of the hand (and a nasty scar) confirmed he had indeed sustained an injury, but he was jolly as ever and insisted he’d had a speedy recovery. All the better for eating delicious gulls’ eggs we presume.
