London calling for Murray as Brit edges nearer to qualifying for end-of-season spectacular at O2
BRITAIN’S Andy Murray took another step towards qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals in London next month by progressing to the quarter-finals of the Valencia Open yesterday.
Murray, who is in a six-way fight for the remaining three places at the O2, beat Italian Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-4 and will meet South African Kevin Anderson in the last eight today.
The Scot is vying with Kei Nishikori, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer, Milos Raonic and Grigor Dimitrov to qualify for the end of season spectacular. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic have already booked their places.
Murray is in course to face qualification rival Ferrer, a three-time winner in Valencia, in the semi-finals after the Spaniard won his second-round match with countryman Fernando Verdasco.
Women’s world No1 Serena Williams revived her hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the WTA Finals by thrashing Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard in Singapore yesterday. Williams, who lost 6-0, 6-2 to Simona Halep on Wednesday, could still miss out if the Romanian loses in straight sets to Ana Ivanovic today. In the other group, Caroline Wozniacki beat Agnieszka Radwanska while Petra Kvitova defeated Maria Sharapova.
