Wasps closing in on top-six place as Sale stumble
WASPS boss Dai Young declared his team’s performance unacceptable despite them running in six tries in a bonus-point victory over already relegated London Welsh yesterday.
Winger Tom Varndell plundered a hat-trick in the 40-13 win, which tightened their grip on sixth place in the Premiership and likely qualification for next season’s European Rugby Champions Cup.
Young said: “We’ve come away with five points and no injuries so we are pleased with that, but with performances like this we are not going to win too many games so we need to improve.”
Wasps’ next opponents are Exeter, who climbed to fourth by beating leaders Northampton for the second time this season.
The Coventry-based side’s prospects were further boosted by seventh-placed Sale suffering a shock 25-23 defeat at London Irish.
Sale led 20-13 only for the Exiles to hit back with two Alex Lewington tries, leaving visiting director of rugby Steve Diamond fuming at referee Greg MacDonald.
“Too often our club are given inexperienced referees,” said Diamond. “We should have had two penalty tries in the first half, and for the critical try just before half-time their player was 15 metres offside when the kick was taken.”
