Romo overcomes injury doubt to lead Cowboys to London joy
REJUVENATED quarterback Tony Romo overcame a back injury which had threatened his participation to lead the Dallas Cowboys to a 31-17 victory over Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium last night.
In the last of three regular-season NFL games being staged this year in the capital, Romo threw a touchdown pass to tight end Jason Witten during the first quarter before hitting Dez Bryant for a pair in the second.
Dallas took the game away from their rivals just before the half-time, adding 28 answered points in total to move them onto 7-3 in the NFC Eastern Division behind Philadelphia Eagles.
All the pre-match talk surrounded Romo’s fitness although the 34-year-old showed no visible signs of discomfort and was hardly touched by the Jaguars defence as he passed for 246 yards and those three touchdowns as Dallas snapped a two-game losing streak.
“It was exciting to be able to play in place like Wembley,” said Romo. “And to come out here and win, that is what it is all about.
“It was important to win and that is why you try and do everything to play. I thought we really needed this game and our team did a great job in coming out, playing hard and playing good football. It feels good and I think whenever you are in a position to control your own destiny it is a good feeling.”
Jacksonville’s Denard Robinson ran in his second score late on but it was no enough to prevent his side dropping to 1-9 for the season.
