Aldi to hire 35,000 new staff for expanding discount drive
GERMAN discounter Aldi is to create 35,000 new jobs and employ up to 1,000 apprentices as it continues to expand its presence in the UK, the company announced yesterday.
During a visit from the Prime Minister David Cameron to the chain’s headquarters in Atherstone, Warwickshire, Aldi reiterated its commitment to increasing the number of stores it owns to 1,000 by 2022, investing £600m in the UK in over the eight-year process.
“Aldi’s plans to create tens of thousands more jobs across the country are a vote of confidence in our long-term economic plan to back business, create more jobs and secure a brighter future for Britain.
“This news will mean more financial security for hardworking families and opportunities for young people who want to get on in life,” the Prime Minister said yesterday.
Aldi, which is shortlisted for City A.M.’s Business of the Year award, also announced it planned to buy more food locally in order to increase the number of customers and retain them.
The budget supermarket has a market share of 4.8 per cent and is currently the fastest-growing grocer in the UK sector. All Britain’s traditional “big four” grocers – Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons – have been losing market share to Aldi and Lidl.
