Millwall down as Rotherham win
MILLWALL’S forlorn quest to retain their Championship status was last night extinguished as closest rivals Rotherham beat Reading 2-1 at the New York Stadium to safely navigate their own relegation concerns.
Second-half strikes from Matt Derbyshire and Lee Frecklington consigned the Lions to relegation and brought their five-year stint in English football’s second tier to a halt. The result also demotes Wigan Athletic.
Millwall were last week given renewed hope of avoiding the drop after Rotherham were deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player. But the stay of execution was short-lived.
Rotherham’s win last night proved the final nail in the coffin, while Millwall now face play-off chasing Wolves on Saturday, managed by ex-boss Kenny Jackett.
