Watson banks Italy clay win
BRITAIN’S Heather Watson continued the country’s clay-court revival by dispatching home favourite Roberta Vinci in the second round of the Italian Open yesterday.
The 22-year-old twice broke Vinci in the opening set before brushing aside her rival in the second to post a 6-3, 6-1 success, with victory coming just 24 hours after compatriot Andy Murray beat Rafael Nadal to lift the Madrid Open. World No41 Watson, who stumbled to a first-round exit at the Madrid Open earlier this month, will now face Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas in the third round.
