Olympic chiefs scrap sport cap
SQUASH and baseball could feature in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) yesterday voted to drop a 28-sport cap which currently governs the showpiece event.
The new directive forms part the Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms and will instead see future summer Games restricted to 10,500 athletes and 310 events.
The reforms aim to make it easier and cheaper for potential hosts to bid for Games, while the IOC have also stipulated that future events may also be held outside the host country or city.
The introduction of new sports, however, would require an existing Olympic discipline, which enjoys multiple competitions, to reduce the number of its events.
