Sturridge heads to Red Sox for injury salvation
LIVERPOOL striker Daniel Sturridge will link up with medical specialists at baseball team Boston Red Sox over the Christmas period in a bid to expedite his return from injury.
Sturridge netted 25 times last season and has been sorely missed by the Reds as they have struggled to replicate the form which saw them narrowly pipped by Manchester City in the title race, scoring only 19 goals in 16 league fixtures.
The Anfield club believe the Red Sox, who like Liverpool are owned by John W Henry’s Fenway Sports Group, have specialists that can assist the 25-year-old in ending his persistent injury problems.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers revealed last month that Sturridge has suffered nine separate injuries to his left thigh muscle since his time as an academy player.
Sturridge’s last appearance for the Reds came in their 3-0 win over Tottenham in August, before initially injuring his thigh during England training ahead of the Euro2016 qualifier against Switzerland.
The former Chelsea and Manchester City forward then suffered another setback, this time to his calf, having returned to training at Melwood before suffering a fresh thigh problem.
Sturridge, who signed a new five-year contract at Anfield in October, has already spent time in Los Angeles working on his rehabilitation and will be accompanied to Boston by Liverpool’s head of conditioning, Glen Driscoll. In his absence, Liverpool’s remaining strike force of Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert have scored just one Premier League goal between them.
