Food price fall eases squeeze
HOUSEHOLD budgets received another boost from falling prices last month, as food, drink, energy and travel costs all fell, according to Asda’s income tracker today.
Summer holiday season got off to a flying start as airfares came in 5.3 per cent lower on the year, in part due to lower oil prices.
And falling household bills helped leave Britons with an extra £17 each week, compared with April last year.
As a result, households now have an average of £187 in discretionary income each week.
“During my 30 years in retail this is the first time I’ve seen essential item deflation and I know this will be welcomed by those stocking up their cupboards,” said Asda chief executive Andy Clarke.
