Queen’s Speech 2015: Five arrested after anti-austerity protest turned violent outside Downing Street, Trafalgar Square

Five people were arrested after the anti-austerity protest in Whitehall and Trafalgar Square turned voilent yesterday. 

 

A 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault on police during the demonstration, which had been organised by the People's Assembly Against Austerity. Another was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.

 

A 45-year-old man and a second man were arrested at the same protest, on suspicion of violent disorder that took place on May 9, in Whitehall, while a further man was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder at Brixton Town Hall on April 25. 

 

All five were taken to central London police stations where they remain in custody.

Although the protest had started off peacefully, parts of it descended into violence. One eyewitness reported hearing chants of “F*** the police”, telling co-demonstrators that “it ain't helpful”.

 

Ukip MP Douglas Carswell was attacked during the melee.

The protest was attended by high profile speakers including newly elected MP Richard Burgon, who told attendees to “blame the bankers, not the immigrants” or austerity. Comedian Shappi Khorsandi said: "This government has the same regard for us as it does for foxes."
