Fifa crisis: Sepp Blatter “considering” remaining President after receiving supportive messages

Sepp Blatter might try and stay on as Fifa's President, according to a source who spoke to Swiss newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag.

 

The anonymous source, who is reportedly close to Blatter, said he had been honoured by the support received from African and Asian football associations, asking him to reconsider his resignation. 

 

 

Only two weeks ago on 2 June, Blatter announced he was stepping down as head of the world's football governing body, after an FBI investigation was launched into widespread corruption at the organisation. He had been in the position since 1998. 

 

"I have decided to lay down my mandate at an extraordinary elective Congress. I will continue to exercise my functions as FIFA President until that election,” he said at the time. 

 

The source also suggested Blatter's renewed interest caused Walter de Gregorio to step down as Fifa's director of communications earlier in the week De Gregorio had called for a fresh start at Fifa, including a new President.
