Piescraper: London skyscraper Can of Ham gets boost as building deal signed after six year hiatus
We've got the Gherkin; we've got the Cheesegrater; we've got the Kettle. Now London's skyline could be about to add another delicious-sounding skyscraper to its line up.
The Can of Ham building, designed by architects Foggo Associates, looks to be back on track after a six-year hiatus.
Trade journal Construction News reports that Mace has been appointed to build the skyscraper, at 60-70 St Mary Axe, in a deal worth more than £100m.
It is being developed by TIAA Henderson Real Estate, and is expected to comprise more than 277,570 sq ft of offices across 24 floors, with the ground floor earmarked for retail space. Mace declined to comment.
The Can of Ham, so called because of its distinctive curves that are said to resemble the rationee's favourite choice of tinned meatstuff, received planning permission as far back as 2008 but along with several other projects was put on ice as the financial crisis took hold.
It was originally put forward by Targetfellow, but when the developer entered administration in 2011 it was sold to TIAA-CREF.
Here is what it looks like in the eyes of its creators Foggo.
