Women’s World Cup: Karen Carney calls on England fans to lift Laura Bassett
England forward Karen Carney has urged the country to rally behind Laura Bassett after the defender’s unlucky own goal ended their Women’s World Cup hopes.
Bassett sobbed uncontrollably after her injury-time mishap condemned the Lionesses to a 2-1 semi-final defeat to holders Japan on Wednesday night in Canada.
“The own goal won’t define her and I won’t allow it to,” said Carney, whose side face Germany in a third place match tomorrow.
“She’s awesome and I hope the country gets behind her and gives her the support and the love she deserves. The girl who had a black eye in the first game against France has bruises all over her body. She puts her body on the line time after time for her country.”
