Developers confirm a start date for £440m Westgate Oxford shopping area
Developers have confirmed that construction on a £440m Westgate Oxford retail and leisure scheme will start in spring, after four years of planning.
The Westgate Oxford Alliance, a joint venture between Land Securities and The Crown Estate, said the new 800,000 square foot development will expand the existing Westgate in Oxford city centre by adding more than 100 new stores, 25 restaurants and cafes and new public spaces. Completion is set for 2017.
So far 28 per cent of the development has been pre-let, with confirmed brands including John Lewis, Curzon, H&M, Next, Primark Superdry, Schuh and Goldsmiths.
The project is set to generate up to 1,000 construction jobs, plus 3,400 retail positions. The contractor has not been named.
Land Securities chief executive Robert Noel said: “Alongside our growing list of customers, we are committed to creating a new Westgate Oxford which not only complements the city’s beauty and heritage status but also enhances its global reputation as a great place to spend time.”
