Lord Green keeps Chambers of Commerce role as HSBC tax evasion row goes on
Former HSBC boss Lord Green is keeping his role as a trade adviser to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), as the business group backed the embattled ex-government minister.
Green was the chief executive and chairman of HSBC while its Swiss private banking arm helped wealthy clients evade taxes.
He is now the focus of a political storm over taxes, with focus on his peerage and appointment as a trade minister in 2010.
The row led to Green quitting chairmanship of lobby group TheCityUK’s advisory on Saturday.
But he is keeping his BCC role on the International Trade Advisory Council.
The BCC is not reviewing his position.
“As trade minister, Stephen Green worked tirelessly to help UK businesses succeed in both new and established export markets,” said BCC director general John Longworth.
Number 10 yesterday rejected calls for an HMRC probe into HSBC, but the Financial Conduct Authority said it is looking in to the Swiss tax avoidance issue.
