Froome retains Tour advantage
BRITAIN’S Chris Froome maintained his grip on the Tour de France overall lead as Poland’s Rafal Majka mustered a breakaway victory in the Pyrenees on stage 11 yesterday.
Team Sky’s Froome, bidding for his second yellow jersey, crossed the finish line alongside most of his rivals, and extended his lead over faltering champion Vincenzo Nibali further still. The 30-year-old remains two minutes and 52 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger in the general classification, American rider Tejay van Garderen of BMC Racing.
Tinkoff-Saxo’s Majka went it alone 5km from the top of the Col de Tourmalet, the main peak of the 188km route, and held on to claim a third Tour stage win of his career by one minute from Irishman Dan Martin, of Cannondale Garmin.
