Life on the edge: The luxury properties on the outskirts of the City
Life on the City fringes is set to get a lot more glamorous. Developers are already lining up to capitalise on postcodes in east London that are set to soar once Crossrail arrives in 2018. An area that’s sure to see the benefits is Whitechapel, whose prime addresses will sit 262ft above Aldgate East station. The penthouses at One Commercial Street, by Redrow London, have been designed in a “brise soleil” style, with vertical folding panes that deflect sunlight to naturally control the temperature of the building.
Over on the north side of the City, the penthouses at Rosebery Avenue in Clerkenwell also have lofty ambitions. Joint developers Londonnewcastle and The Third Quarter have fused the heritage frontage of the former Victorian factory with contemporary living inspired by Manhattan loft apartments. The video installation in the lift, created by artist Marco Brambilla, is also a nod to the elevators in New York’s Standard Hotel. On a slightly larger scale – but still boutique for a new build – developer Crest Nicholson is hoping The Bevenden will add a dash of luxury to Hoxton’s vibrant party scene. This collection of 42 one, two and three bedroom apartments sits between 15 and 21 New North Road, around half a mile from Old Street station; the show apartment opened its doors last month.
