Danny Willett hails his resilience after securing third Euro Tour success
England’s Danny Willett insisted his resilience during a tempestuous third round was crucial to securing victory at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland yesterday.
Willett, who tied sixth at last week’s Open, carded a five-under par final round of 65 to win by a solitary stroke from fellow Yorkshireman Matt Fitzpatrick and net his third European Tour title.
The 27-year-old finished the tournament at the picturesque Crans-sur-Sierre course in the Swiss Alps on 17 under after a bogey free final round, while Tyrell Hatton made it an all-England top three, finishing a shot adrift of Fitzpatrick.
World No32 Willett, who could climb into the top 25 with this result, had shared the overnight lead with Fitzpatrick heading into yesterday’s final round despite a firing 71 on Saturday.
“Yesterday was probably the key day despite chucking in the 71,” said Willett. “It was key to stay in contention. It was a tough day, the wind was flapping and I wasn’t feeling the greatest but I knuckled down to grind out a one over par. It was probably the day that made it.”
“But I’m delighted. A great day today. I couldn’t be happier. I was very, very good, I kept very, very calm all day. I just waited for the right things to happen and get on a run.”
Spain’s Sergio Garcia finished in sixth place after carding 11-under par for the tournament, while England’s Lee Westwood was tied for 37th on three under.
