City retain title challenge with tense triumph
MANCHESTER City stayed on Chelsea’s tails with a nervy 2-0 victory over Premier League basement side Leicester to complete a midweek programme in which all the top seven won.
Goals at the end of each half from midfielders David Silva and James Milner ensured City stayed five points behind the leaders, although the champions were given a scare when Foxes winger Riyad Mahrez hit the post with the score at 1-0.
City’s rivals Manchester United needed an 89th-minute goal from Ashley Young to see off Newcastle 1-0 at St James’ Park. The win kept Louis van Gaal’s men in the top four, one point behind Arsenal.
Liverpool returned to fifth, two points behind United, with a 2-0 home triumph over Burnley. Midfielder Jordan Henderson scored his second goal in as many games just before the half-hour and helped to create the clincher for striker Daniel Sturridge shortly after the break.
Everton’s troubles continued as they lost 2-0 at Stoke to goals in each half from Victor Moses and Mame Biram Diouf. It lifted the Potters to eighth and left the Toffees 14th, just six points above the relegation zone.
