Australia crack record World Cup score in Afghanistan thrashing
CO-HOSTS Australia smashed a World Cup record total of 417-6 during their 275-run mauling of Afghanistan in Perth yesterday.
Opener David Warner smacked 178 while Steve Smith hit 95 and Glenn Maxwell 88 as Australia surpassed India’s 413-5 against Bermuda in Port of Spain in 2007.
The winning margin was also a tournament high and surpassed the 257-run milestone set by India against Bermuda eight years ago, a feat equalled when South Africa thrashed West Indies last Friday.
Australia are third in Pool A after posting their second victory in four matches, three points behind New Zealand, who have already qualified for the last eight.
Pakistan, meanwhile, wrapped up a routine 129-run success against United Arab Emirates in Napier to boost their hopes of sealing qualification from Pool B and making the quarter-finals.
