Australia Test debutant Jess Jonassen thwarts England progress after seamer Anya Shrubsole stars with the ball
Test debutant Jess Jonassen restricted England’s progress on the opening day of the Women’s Ashes Test at Canterbury by scoring an unbeaten 95 and leading Australia’s recovery from a perilous position yesterday.
Seamer Anya Shrubsole claimed the first four Australian wickets to fall as England reduced the tourists to 87-4 and then 99-5 after the tourists had progressed to a position of strength at 66-0.
But Queensland all-rounder Jonassen shared half-century partnerships with Alyssa Healy and fellow debutant Kristen Beams to guide Australia to 268-8 at the close.
England trail Australia by four points to two in the seven-match series, having lost the one-day series 2-1, although four points will be awarded to the winners of the Test, with three Twenty20s to follow.
