Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro set for punishment after feeling the wrath of manager Jose Mourinho
Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro is expected to lose her place on the bench just days after she incurred the wrath of manager Jose Mourinho by rushing onto the field to treat a stricken player.
Mourinho criticised his medical staff after the Premier League champions were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Swansea in Saturday’s first match of the new season.
The Blues boss, unhappy that treatment of star Eden Hazard temporarily reduced his team to nine men, said team doctors “need to understand the game” and not be “impulsive and naive”.
Carneiro is tipped to retain the title of first-team doctor but with a different role that does not include attending games or training. Physio Jon Fearn’s responsibilities are also thought to be under review.
Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, an £8m summer signing from Stoke, is set to make his full debut in Sunday’s trip to Manchester City after Chelsea lost an appeal against Thibaut Courtois’s red card against Swansea.
Begovic endured a mixed pre-season, conceding seven goals in four appearances that amounted to just 216 minutes.
His unofficial debut came as a second-half substitute against New York Red Bulls, in which Chelsea went from 2-0 ahead at half-time to 4-2 losers, while he was questioned for Fiorentina’s winning goal in a 1-0 triumph at Stamford Bridge days before the new campaign.
The Bosnia international came on following Courtois’s dismissal against Swansea and was unable to prevent Bafetimbi Gomis from equalising from the penalty spot.
