Looks like meat’s back on the menu, boys!
Chefs from restaurant company ETM Group were shipped out to the Yorkshire moors at dawn yesterday to bag the first grouse of the season. And the team at Clerkenwell eatery the Jugged Hare promised to have their bird on the table within 12 hours of reaching the estate. Once the brace was shot at 10:30am, the chefs had to floor it down the M1 to bring greedy Londoners their country fare: a five course dinner featuring rabbit, wood pigeon, hare and venison. Get those guys a beer.
▀ The English stereotype of the miserly financier is more than just that: Britons are the second-worst tippers in the world, apparently. Or at least that’s according to Direct Line, which recently published a tipping index that put Brits in their least favourite position – next to the French. According to eateries and bars surveyed by the company, 21 per cent said that Brits just can’t tip. Unsurprisingly, our neighbours across the pond are the best, with 27 per cent of establishments suggesting that Americans tip most of the time, while Germans came second with 21 per cent of the vote. Embarrassingly enough, Britain was also beaten by Russia and Italy, while just narrowly missing bottom place thanks to France, with 30 per cent of establishments voting the French the worst tippers. The findings also suggested that the average tip received in bars and restaurants was 11 per cent, although in the most generous places – the US and Argentina – that rises to 13 per cent. Meanwhile, Britons tend to tip about seven per cent, but over a third of establishments say they don’t tip at all. Well, they say you shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth…
