George Bowen looks primed to land the grey race
THERE is no finer sight in racing than a field of solely grey horses powering along Newmarket’s July course and tomorrow’s Betway Grey Horse Handicap (2.15pm) promises to be another wonderful spectacle.
Betway have been asking the public to name their favourite grey horse of all time and it’s no surprise that Desert Orchid and One Man finished top of the list, with Daylami another popular selection.
It’s fair to say that the standard of tomorrow’s runners isn’t anywhere near as high, but it doesn’t seem to matter. This has become one of the most popular events on the horseracing calendar.
Crew Cut won this race two years ago, while the now nine-year-old Time Medicean will bid for a second success after landing it back in 2011.
However, I’m going to take a chance on one of the younger brigade as I’m convinced Richard Fahey’s GEORGE BOWEN is well-handicapped.
The three-year-old has only won two of his 12 career starts, but he has produced a couple of decent displays this term and all ground seems to come alike to him.
Stablemate Steve Prescott is respected, although he wouldn’t want the ground to get too testing.
The following race, the Betway Price Blitz Handicap (2.50pm), was won 12 months ago by Eastern Impact who went on to finish third in last month’s July Cup.
Whether there is anything equally as good lurking in the field is doubtful, however if there is, it is surely Tom Dascombe’s DAWN’S EARLY LIGHT who comes here instead of the Great St Wilfrid.
This son of July Cup winner Starspangledbanner is on a hat-trick after impressive wins at Pontefract and Ascot. He has shown a preference for decent ground, though, and probably won’t run if it rains heavily.
Betway are going best price on every runner in this race between 13:00-13:30 tomorrow, so the advice is to bide your time until then.
