Tottenham and Arsenal set for Capital One Cup third round showdown
London battle lines will be drawn in the Capital One Cup third round after last night’s draw refused to be shy in exposing the early stages of the competition to rivalries.
Tottenham will host Arsenal at White Hart Lane while Crystal Palace, who needed extra time to overcome League Two side Shrewsbury Town 4-1 last night, will entertain Charlton, victors of Peterborough at London Road.
The draw also pitched Aston Villa and Birmingham together. Former Chelsea winger Scott Sinclair scored a hat-trick as Villa edged past Notts County in extra-time, while their city rivals beat Gillingham.
Holders Chelsea head to League One outfit Walsall, West Ham visit fellow Premier League side Leicester, while Preston’s reward for dumping out Watford is a home tie against Bournemouth.
Queens Park Rangers were giant-killing victims last season after losing to Burton Albion, and suffered a similar fate this time around after bowing courtesy of a 2-1 home defeat to Carlisle. The Cumbrians will face Liverpool at Anfield in round three.
North East pair Newcastle and Sunderland, who were drawn at home to in-form Manchester City, were on the right side of high-scoring victories, dispatching Northampton 4-1 and Exeter City 6-3 respectively.
