Better to climb the ladder in work than find a new job as average UK salary has dropped 3.3 per cent in 2015
Hate your boss? It might still be better to stay put, as new data reveal the average UK advertised salary has dropped 3.3 per cent this year to £33,318.
Figures from jobs database Adzuna, show that while advertised salaries have slipped, wages for those in work have risen more than 2.9 per cent.
London saw the biggest fall in offered salaries: 5.3 per cent from 2014. It’s the first time since 2012 that all UK regions have experienced a fall in advertised salaries.
It seems that the flood of recent graduates, and an increase in lower-paid jobs is responsible for the decline.
Perhaps it’s unsurprising then that the number of unfilled vacancies is growing; in the year to August there was a 27.1 per cent increase in the number of jobs advertised.
The only winners seem to be the HR managers responsible for the drop: there was a 3.1 per cent in crease in advertised salaries in HR, to £30,767, the second fastest wage growth in August behind the travel industry.
Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said: “This confirms that the jobs market is slowing down. The skills shortage has not benefited job hunters as might be expected. It’s currently easier to climb the career ladder by staying in your current role.”
