Amazon UK to create 19,000 jobs over Christmas to cope with extra demand
Amazon UK is creating 19,000 people in seasonal roles over Christmas as it gears up for the busiest time of the year, the online retailer announced yesterday.
The company said the majority of the jobs will be in its fulfillment and customer service centres to help cope with the extra demand.
Salaries will start from £7.00 per hour and no one will be hired on zero-hour contracts, an Amazon spokesperson said.
“There are many people who take up seasonal roles each and every Christmas. We look forward to welcoming them back as well as the many new faces who will join us for the first time,” Amazon’s vice president of UK operations, John Tagawa, said.
He added that “hundreds” of the temporary workers this Christmas will be offered the chance to stay on a permanent basis.
Amazon has created 700 permanent roles in its eight UK fulfilment centres so far this year, taking its headcount at those sites to 7,800 staff.
