Britons plan to splash out £700m on smart technology to protect their homes, with one in five people planning to invest, an Allianz Insurance study revealed today.
According to Allianz Insurance’s Smart Tech Safer Homes study, forward-thinking Londoners are leading the way. Those living in the city having already spent £774 on average on smart home-protection technology.
Thanks to long working days and commutes, people are home for fewer hours, with the average UK home sitting empty for 91 hours a week. At 96.8 hours a week, the average London home is empty for even longer.
“We know that the majority of burglaries take place when we’re out,” said Tim Pitts, head of product (home and motor), Allianz Insurance. “Our study shows that more and more homeowners are turning to smart technology to protect their homes.”
According to the Office for National Statistics, 785,000 domestic burglaries were reported in the year ended March 2015.
