Black Friday backlash begins: Two million orders “won’t arrive on time”
This year's Black Friday may not have created quite the frenzy it did last year – no fisticuffs in the aisles this time around – but that doesn't mean it can't create the same levels of disappointment. Or that's according to supply chain consultancy LCP Consulting, which has warned that two million Black Friday orders could be delayed.
According to the company, 22 million parcels worth more than £1bn in total are due to be delivered next week as a result of Black Friday. But of those, 2.2 million "will not arrive when the retailer promises".
And during the Christmas period as a whole, 17 million parcels worth £695m won't arrive when the retailer promises.
LCP suggested seven per cent of orders – that's £75m worth – will be delivered late because of either the delivery company or the retailer, while 2.9 per cent, worth £31m, will need to be re-delivered because the customer wasn't there to open the door.
Meanwhile, it turns out people are becoming increasingly enthusiastic about next-day delivery, which is set to rise as much as 20 per cent on last year – that's an extra four million parcels. Good for delivery companies, not so great for our wallets…
