Travel disruption on Southern, Southeastern, Thameslink and South West Trains as rail fares rise 1.1 per cent
Signalling failures, engineering works and unspecified "problems" meant it was back to work (or rather, not) with a bump for commuters this morning, as a number of London trains were delayed and cancelled.
South West Trains said a "problem" at the depot near Guildford meant some trains to and from London Waterloo were being cancelled "as trains are unable to leave the depot to begin services".
There was no explanation of what the problem was, or when it would be resolved, but the issue is likely to affect services until at least 10am, the train operator said.
Meanwhile, Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express services were delayed by up to 30 minutes because of a signalling problem at Purley.
Thameslink services between Brighton and London Bridge have been reduced to one an hour, while Gatwick Express services will run every half an hour. Further alterations and cancellations are likely, the operator said.
And Southern has also been suffering from a signalling failure at Hastings, which although resolved by 7:45am, was still expected to result in delays of up to 40 minutes for trains running to Tunbridge Wells. This is expected to continue until 10am.
Engineering works were also affecting services between Crowborough and Uckfield.
It comes as commuters have to stump up further fees for their train services, as rail fares increased by 1.1 per cent from 2 January.
