New Tesla update allows drivers to summon their cars from their smartphones – putting them one step closer to being
Tesla owners can be a little more like James Bond this morning, after the company launched a software update which allows them to summon their cars using a smartphone app.
In a blog post yesterday, the electric car giant said Vesion 7.1 of its Autopilot software will include a Summon feature, allowing it to "open your garage door, enter your garage, park itself and shut down".
"In the morning, you wake up, walk out the front door, and summon your car. It will open the garage door and come to greet you." Presumably it means electric garage doors, mind…
The news follows the release of Autopilot in October, which uses sensors on the car to allow it to drive and park itself (although drivers are encouraged to keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times).
Yesterday's release includes updates to that, with a "new range of… active safety and convenience features to give you more confidence behind the wheel, increase your safety on the road, and make highway driving more enjoyable".
But although Tesla might be at the cutting edge of technology, that isn't enough for investors. Shares finished at $211 yesterday, 2.16 per cent lower. That followed a seven per cent tumble last week, after the company only just hit a delivery goal.
Still – maybe investors will change their minds after they watch this example of what Tesla owners could do now…
