It’s official: Google’s Alphabet has overtaken Apple as the most valuable company in the world
Google is now worth more than Apple, becoming the most valuable publicly traded company in the world.
A set of stellar results from Google parent company Alphabet after hours on Monday evening sent shares soaring. Now that market's are back open, Google has taken its official place at the top of the pile with a $541.81bn market cap.
However, it's neither Apple or Google which have been the most valuable company in history. That title, in fact and perhaps surprisingly, goes to Microsoft. In 1999, adjusted for inflation, it was worth more than $871bn. That also beats Apple's glorious rise to the top around this time last year when it surpassed a value of $700bn. Since then, Apple's worth has inched lower and is now just under the $530bn mark, leaving Google to zip ahead and take the top spot.
