UK car registrations up 8.4 per cent year-on-year in February
Car registrations in the UK rose by 8.4 per cent year-on-year to 83,395 units in February – the strongest performance for the month of February since 2004, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.
Alternative-fuel vehicles showed the strongest growth, up by nearly 20 per cent to 2,221 in the month. Diesel and petrol registrations grew by 5.6 per cent and 10.7 per cent respectively.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “February is typically one of the quietest months of the year, ahead of March’s plate change, but this positive performance is encouraging and puts the sector in a good position for the coming 12 months.”
Private customers drove the increases, with demand up 22.6 per cent, while fleet demand was down by 1.4 per cent.
Ford Fiesta cars were by far the favourite cars, with 4,507 units registered, followed by the Volkswagen Golf at 2,574 units and the Nissan Qashqai at 2,486.
