Asda and Aldi recall white and dark rums over fears of glass fragments in bottles produced by Glen Turner Co

Bottles of dark and white rums sold in Aldi and Asda have been recalled by the food and drinks watchdog over concerns the bottles may contain "small fragments of glass".

The spirits producer Glen Turner Co, which supplies both supermarket chains, has recalled 70cl bottles of rum on a precautionary basis as they pose "a possible health risk". The Food Standards Agency warned anyone who had bought the drinks not to consume the products and return it to the supermarkets for a full refund.

Asda's Liberty Ship Superior Dark Rum and Superior White Rum are affected by the recall, while Aldi's Old Jopking Brands have also been recalled.

"The supplier Glen Turner has recommended a recall to both Asda and Aldi for white and dark rum products as a precautionary measure. This affects our Old Hopking Dark and White rum products. We have removed these products from our affected stores and have immediately suspended all further orders with the supplier while we investigate this matter," an Aldi spokesperson said.

"Customers that have purchased the products listed in our public recall notices should return them to their nearest store where they will receive a full refund."

At the end of March, Aldi recalled a number of biscuit and cracker products made by a Teeside-based company called Baketime, after fears of "pest contamination".
