Mervyn King abdicates from the board of recently relegated Aston Villa after just two months in the role
When former Bank of England governor Sir Mervyn King announced that he would be joining the board at Aston Villa, his task at the football club was likened to battling the fallout from the financial crisis.
But now, after just two months in the role, King has abdicated from the club alongside fellow director and ex Football Association chair David Bernstein, after the team was relegated from the Premier League.
Bernstein joined the club's board last month while the former governor of the Bank of England King was appointed in February.
In a dismal season for the Midlands club, the team has managed just three wins in 34 Premier League matches, taking just 16 points. Last month the club also lost its chief executive Tom Fox.
The club said: "It is with regret that Aston Villa Football Club today announces the resignations of Mervyn King and David Bernstein as directors of the club. The club would like to thank both for all their efforts throughout their short time as members of the board."
"The chairman, Steve Hollis, is currently engaged in extensive negotiations in relation to the sale of the club. Brian Little will continue to advise the chairman on all football related matters."
"A search to appoint a new manager remains a priority."
