Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney condemns actions of supporters as Football Association vow to probe pre-match attack on team bus
Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney condemned the actions of supporters after West Ham’s farewell to the Boleyn Ground threatened to be overshadowed by pre-match attacks on his side’s team bus as it arrived at Upton Park last night.
The coach’s tinted windows were broken and damaged after it was pelted with glass bottles as it attempted to battle through hordes of supporters gathered outside the stadium.
Kick-off was delayed by 45 minutes until 8.30pm, while the Football Association later confirmed that it will be working closely with the Metropolitan Police to investigate the matter.
“It wasn’t nice. The coach got smashed up,” said Rooney. “We know it’s a big game for West Ham, a big night, but I’m sure West Ham as a club will be disappointed with what the fans have done.”
West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan showed little sympathy. He said: “I think the police and officials have been kind, I would make them kick-off at 7.45pm if it was up to me.”
