Goodwood betting: Dettori gunning for more glory at Goodwood
Frankie Dettori is approaching his 3,000th British winner and can get one nearer his target on GALILEO GOLD in the Sussex Stakes (Wednesday 3.10pm).
The charismatic Italian has won this race on four occasions, but not since Ramonti in 2007 and this looks a good opportunity for him to end that run.
Hugo Palmer enjoyed a double at Newmarket on Saturday and I’m happy to take the 2/1 available with Coral with his stable clearly in good form.
His main danger in the market looks to be Royal Ascot rival The Gurkha, who was held by Galileo Gold in the St James’s Palace Stakes last month.
Many believe Aidan O’Brien’s entry was unlucky, but he couldn’t get past Galileo Gold that day and it was a similar story when he finished second in the Coral Eclipse behind Hawkbill.
Awtaad finished behind Galileo Gold and The Gurkha at Ascot and is likely to have to settle for a place at best again. His jockey Chris Hayes is also having his first taste of this unique course.
Elsewhere on the card, trainer Sir Michael Stoute goes into the Gordon Stakes (2.35pm) double-handed with his two entries currently heading the market.
That man Dettori is on Platitude, who finished second at Newmarket last time out, but it’s ULYSSES who will be carrying my money.
Stoute was confident enough to send him straight to the Investec Derby following a runaway 1m2f maiden win at Newbury and he went off just 8/1.
In the end the three-year-old was well beaten but he’s been rested since and there’s reason to believe a big run is on the cards back on better ground.
Across The Stars also ran poorly for Stoute in the Derby, only to get back to winning ways at Ascot and I’m hoping Ulysses can do the same at 7/2 with Coral.
In the Molecomb Stakes (3.45pm), I fancy GLOBAL APPLAUSE to return to the winner’s enclosure after a sub-standard performance at Ascot.
A superb victory in a Listed race at Sandown in late May meant Ed Dunlop’s charge went into that Royal Ascot race as the 3/1 favourite, only to finish fifth.
The soft ground didn’t suit that day – both of his wins have come on a sound surface over five furlongs – and Ed Dunlop is back among the winners. Take the 4/1 with Betway.
