MPs and campaigners deliver petition against M&S pay changes to the retailer’s flagship store
MPs and campaigners turned up at Marks and Spencer's flagship store in Marble Arch today to deliver a petition – signed by 90,000 people – voicing concerns about the company's proposed pay cuts.
Under the proposed changes, staff will lose the pay premiums they receive for working on Sundays and Bank Holidays and will face reduced pension contributions, but basic pay will be increased.
Some employees will lose a quarter of their salary under the changes. Banners held by the protesters read: "This isn't any pay cut…It's a big fat M&S pay cut."

In the midst of the controversy over pay, M&S has signed a new marketing deal with Grey London worth £60m.
Think again M&S & don't cut pay or pensions for loyal workers. Shows why we need unions @UsdawUnion @Siobhain_MP pic.twitter.com/CKdyWbhudb

Siobhain McDonagh MP said: "It is extremely telling that M&S senior management has decided to prioritise a £60m marketing deal, at exactly the same time as they are consulting on cutting staff pay by thousands of pounds. The company is clearly aware of the reputational damage that it has faced as a result of the changes it plans.
"Loyal, longstanding staff have lost their morale after their years of loyal service– while M&S customers are seriously disappointed by a company that they had always seen as well-respected bastions of moral values on the high street. M&S could save that £60m by reversing their planned cuts – that would do wonders for its reputation."

A spokesperson for M&S said: "We believe our proposed new approach to pay and pensions would reward our people in a fair and consistent way, simplify and modernise our business and help us attract and retain the best talent so we can continue to provide great service for our customers.
"The proposals, which are subject to consultation with our employees, include one of highest pay rates and one of the best benefit packages in UK retail."
