The UK must be bold in expanding new nuclear power capacity
If the UK is to strengthen its energy security and reach net zero by 2050, nuclear must play a significant role. But with all but one of the UK’s existing nuclear plants due to retire by the end of this decade, it is vital that a clear plan for a programme of new stations, both large and small modular reactors (SMRs), is set out.
The energy crisis has shown the benefits of having a strong, resilient, baseload of nuclear to complement renewables and reduce reliance on volatile fossil gas. Going big on nuclear means having a secure and sovereign supply of firm power which will stretch into the next century, supporting communities with good, highly skilled jobs and significant investment worth billions to regional economies
