Shortage warning: Greggs stores ‘may not have’ vegan sausage rolls
Fast food chain Greggs has warned its popular vegan sausage roll is among products to have experienced “temporary interruptions” in supply.
“Some shops may not have them or may not have them throughout the day. It varies,” a Greggs’ spokesperson told news agency Reuters.
The vegan alternative has become a beloved staple of the bakery chain, following its launch in 2019.
The bakery chain said it was working hard to minimise the disruption to customers and had a range of alternative items available.
A spokesperson told CityA.M.: “Like others, we’re seeing temporary interruptions which are affecting the supply for some of our products. Our stock levels will vary from day to day but we are working hard to minimise any impact on the availability of our products.”
Greggs boss Roger Whiteside told the news agency last month the firm had been hit by staffing and supply chain challenges following the pandemic and Brexit – like many of its high street rivals.
In October, the firm said: “Greggs has not been immune to the well-publicised pressures on staffing and supply chains and we have seen some disruption to the availability of labour and supply of ingredients and products in recent months.
“Food input inflation pressures are also increasing; whilst we have short-term protection as a result of our forward buying positions we expect costs to increase towards the end of 2021 and into 2022.”
However, the bakery chain has recovered well from the impact of the pandemic. It reported a 3.5 per cent rise in like-for-like sales in the third quarter of its financial year compared to pre-pandemic levels.
It said it was planning to accelerate the pace of new store openings to 150 net new shops next year, up from an aim of 100 during 2021.
