China reports highest jump in new Covid cases since January
China recorded the highest daily tally of new Covid cases since January amid a surge in imported infections in Yunnan province sharing the border with Myanmar.
Chinese health officials reported 65 new confirmed cases on Monday, more than double a day earlier. That was the most number of daily new cases since 30 January, when 92 cases were reported.
Imported infections in Yunnan Province accounted for most of the new cases, with 41 news cases were Chinese nationals who recently returned from Myanmar.
Myanmar reported 5189 new Covid infections and 281 deaths on Monday, and the United Nations has said to step up effort to fight against the “alarming spike” in the military-run country.
The latest Yunnan Covid spike started last month and concentrated in Ruili and Longchuan, two small cities close to China’s border with Myanmar.
This marks the second cluster of Covid infections in China involving the fast-spreading Delta variant, following an outbreak in Guangdong Province through May and June.
China’s total of Covid cases has now reached 92,342, with deaths unchanged at 4,636.
